International Conference on “Faithful Implementation of International Humanitarian Law”
This international Conference will be held in Amman on 6 and 7 April 2016, as a joint initiative between the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Faculty of Law at the Applied Science University (ASU).
English and Arabic will be the two working languages of the conference. The attached leaflet explains objectives, themes and how to apply to take part in the conference.
The deadline for submission of abstracts and research papers is 10 March 2016. Please note that this deadline is flexible if we receive an initial expression of interest by the mentioned date.
ASU will cover the accommodation costs and two meals (breakfast and lunch) for up to ten foreign participants attending the conference, excluding the cost of travel.
The General Coordinator of the Conference is Dr. Omar A’amar (firstname.lastname@example.org), with support from Dr. Tariq Al Sarafandi (email@example.com), both from the ASU. Abstracts should be sent to (firstname.lastname@example.org).
Coordinated by ASU in collaboration with ICRC, the conference aims at fostering academic debate and research on key humanitarian concerns and prominent contemporary issues related to international humanitarian law, mainly in terms of States’ compliance and actual implementation on the ground. Topics covered will also include: better protection for victims and property, efforts to prevent IHL violations, and mechanisms of IHL implementation.
The Conference will also address the status of IHL and the effects of recent developments in the field of Weapon Technology and Modern Battlespace, and will attempt to clarify various implications and possibilities of promoting compliance with IHL provisions, hence make proposals for its development.
The outcome of the event will be summed up and dedicated in a special publication containing all discussed themes, and will be available for students and practitioners alike. A special section in this book will be devoted to recommendations, research results and influential ideas.

3rd: Environment Protection in Times of Armed Conflict;
4th: Classification of Internal Conflict;
5th: Enforced Disappearance;
6th: Terrorism and IHL;
7th: Refugee Issues.
The conference will bring together key actors and experts, ranging from legal practitioners, academics, and Jurists to governmental representatives, policy-makers and other think tanks engaged in the development of the rule of law in armed conflict:
- Academics at universities inside and outside Jordan;
- Officials and representatives of governmental entities;
- International organizations concerned;
- Local, regional and global civil society organizations;
- Independent researchers;
- Journalists and media.
- Thursday 10 March 2016: deadline for receiving accepted research papers;
- Wednesday - Thursday 6 - 7 April 2016: the conference will be held over two days, each divided into two periods between nine in the morning and four in the afternoon.
